Question 1 of 36

1 Which TWO features would distinguish the executive information system that Ylang Beauty Ltd plans to install for its directors in Gaborone, Botswana, from the management information system its branch managers already use? Select TWO.
2 The finance director of Nakuru Bay Dairies Ltd in Kenya will circulate draft redundancy proposals, naming 46 employees, to four board members before next week's meeting. Which control is most appropriate for distributing this highly confidential information?
3 Which type of data analytics is Fonio Foods plc using when its software in Dakar recommends, for each retailer, the delivery day and order size that will minimise stock-outs and transport cost next month?
4 Bagamoyo Logistics Ltd, a warehouse operator in Francistown, Botswana, charges overheads to clients using activity-based costing. Receiving costs of $186,000 are driven by 1,240 inbound deliveries, and picking costs of $252,000 by 84,000 order lines. One retail client had 310 deliveries and 16,800 order lines this year. Which overhead cost should be charged to this client?
5 What is the relevant cost of material K that Tilapia Feeds Ltd in Karongi, Rwanda, should include in the quotation it is preparing for a one-off feed order? The order needs 1,340 kg. There are 900 kg in inventory, bought at $6.40 per kg and not used regularly; they could be sold for $3.90 per kg or used in place of another material, saving $4.60 per kg. The replacement cost is $7.15 per kg.
6 A management accountant at Fonio Foods plc is preparing break-even figures for two products sold in a constant unit mix of 3 couscous packs to 2 flour packs. Couscous sells at $4.80 with a variable cost of $2.88; flour sells at $3.20 with a variable cost of $2.24. Annual fixed costs are $1,134,000. Which break-even sales revenue should she report?
7 Which shadow price per labour hour should Nuru Solar Ltd use when negotiating overtime? It makes two lamps: the P1 (contribution $29, 2 labour hours, 3 machine hours) and the P2 (contribution $38, 4 labour hours, 2 machine hours). Its optimal plan of 700 P1 and 540 P2 uses all 3,560 labour hours and all 3,180 machine hours available.
8 Nakuru Bay Dairies Ltd sells 36,000 tubs of yoghurt a month at $6.40. Research shows that each $0.20 rise in price would cut demand by 1,500 tubs, and each $0.20 fall would raise it by the same amount. The variable cost is $2.10 per tub and fixed overhead is absorbed at $0.90 per tub. Which price should the company set to maximise monthly profit?
9 Which TWO benefits would Bagamoyo Logistics Ltd gain by replacing its annual fixed budget with a quarterly rolling budget, given that diesel prices in Botswana now change sharply within each year? Select TWO.
10 The farm manager of Tilapia Aquafarms Ltd on Lake Kivu budgeted feed costs of $86,400 for 48,000 kg of fish. Feed is a variable cost. Actual output was 52,500 kg and actual feed cost was $97,650. Which feed cost variance should be reported in the flexed budget statement?
11 What sales mix contribution variance should Ylang Beauty Ltd report for March? The sales director is reviewing results. The budget was 6,000 soaps (standard contribution $3.40 each) and 4,000 lotions ($5.90 each). Actual sales were 6,900 soaps and 3,600 lotions.
12 The finance director of Nakuru Bay Hotels Ltd wants to compare credit control with last year. Revenue was $4,380,000, of which 75% was on credit to tour operators. Trade receivables were $396,000 at the start of the year and $468,000 at the end. Which receivables collection period, based on year-end receivables, should the director report?
13 Which proposed measure for the board pack of Nuru Clinics Ltd, a private clinic chain in Mombasa, would be a result rather than a determinant under Fitzgerald and Moon's building block model?
14 Fonio Foods plc, based in Senegal, will supply fonio flour to its new subsidiary in Kenya at a transfer price. Which TWO issues arise specifically because the two divisions operate in different countries? Select TWO.
15 Which measure should Kiboko District Council in Maun, Botswana, use to report the efficiency of its water-treatment service in a value for money review?

Case 1: Gombe Furniture Ltd

Gombe Furniture Ltd makes office and school furniture at a factory in the Special Economic Zone in Kigali, Rwanda. Its management accountant, Uwase Diane, is reviewing the costing system and two new products before the board's planning meeting.

ItemOffice desksSchool benches

  • Bottleneck: the CNC cutting machine, with 7,400 hours a year. Total factory costs (all costs except materials) are $1,687,200 a year. A standard office desk sells for $152, uses $61 of materials and needs 0.35 CNC hours.
  • Sawdust extraction: the factory runs an extraction and filtration plant that removes sawdust and varnish particles from the air after cutting and spraying, before the air is released outside.
16 The management accountant of Gombe Furniture Ltd is comparing activity-based costing with the current labour-hour absorption basis. Which change in the overhead cost of each school bench should she report if ABC is adopted?
17 What target cost gap per ergonomic desk should the design team at Gombe Furniture Ltd aim to close before launch, given the market price and the margin the board wants to earn?
18 The board of Gombe Furniture Ltd wants a whole-life view of the smart classroom desk before approving its launch. Which life-cycle cost per unit should the management accountant present?
19 Which throughput accounting ratio (TPAR) should Gombe Furniture Ltd report for the standard office desk, given the CNC cutting machine bottleneck and the factory costs?
20 The sustainability officer of Gombe Furniture Ltd is classifying environmental costs as prevention, detection, internal failure or external failure costs. Which category should the cost of running the extraction and filtration plant be placed in?

Case 2: Kiboko Engineering Ltd

Kiboko Engineering Ltd is a fabrication company in Gaborone, Botswana. A diamond mine near Jwaneng has asked it to quote for a one-off order of 40 steel pump housings. The estimator, Mpho Sebego, must set the minimum price that leaves the company no worse off. Design drawings for the housings were prepared last month at a cost of $2,600.

ResourceNeeded for the orderInformation
Steel plate3,200 kg2,000 kg in inventory, bought at $3.10 per kg; replacement cost $3.45 per kg; used regularly on other work

Fixed production overhead, budgeted at $1,248,000 for the year, is absorbed at $12.00 per direct labour hour.

21 Which relevant cost of steel plate should Kiboko Engineering Ltd include in its minimum price for the pump housing order from the mine near Jwaneng?
22 The estimator at Kiboko Engineering Ltd must value the alloy A already held in inventory, which has no other use in the business. Which relevant cost of alloy A should be included in the minimum price?
23 What is the relevant cost of the skilled welding labour that Kiboko Engineering Ltd should include in the minimum price it is preparing for the pump housing order?
24 Kiboko Engineering Ltd will quote the relevant-cost price that leaves it no worse off. Which total minimum price should it quote for the 40 pump housings, based on the information given?
25 Which treatment of the fixed production overhead, absorbed at $12.00 per labour hour, should Kiboko Engineering Ltd apply when pricing this one-off order?

Case 3: Teranga Fisheries Ltd

Teranga Fisheries Ltd processes fish landed at the port of Dakar, Senegal. One of its products is a fish paste sold to caterers across West Africa, made by blending three types of fish. Some input is lost as bones, skin and water during cooking, so the standard allows for an output of 88 kg of paste for every 100 kg of fish input.

During May the production manager, Fatou Ndiaye, reduced the amount of mackerel in the blend because the mackerel catch was poor, and used more sardinella and bonga instead.

FishStandard mix (% of input)Standard price per kgActual input in May (kg)
Sardinella45%$1.8420,150
Mackerel35%$2.6013,020
Bonga20%$1.159,830
Total100%43,000

Actual output of fish paste in May was 37,576 kg. All fish was bought at standard prices.

The company reports materials price, mix and yield variances to the board each month, and production managers' bonuses are partly based on keeping materials costs within the standard allowed for actual output.

26 The production manager at Teranga Fisheries Ltd wants to explain the effect of the changed blend on May's costs. Which total materials mix variance should be reported for the fish paste?
27 What materials yield variance should Teranga Fisheries Ltd report for the fish paste in May, as the production manager is reviewing processing losses at the Dakar plant?
28 The finance team at Teranga Fisheries Ltd needs to reconcile the mix and yield figures with the overall efficiency of fish usage. Which total materials usage variance should it report for May?
29 Which standard materials cost per kg of fish paste output should Teranga Fisheries Ltd use when valuing May's production of 37,576 kg?
30 The mackerel content of the fish paste fell below standard in May. If the new blend continues, which best describes the main risk that Teranga Fisheries Ltd faces?

Section C, Question 31 (20 marks): Kivu Methane Energy Ltd

Kivu Methane Energy Ltd extracts methane from Lake Kivu at a platform near Rubavu, Rwanda, and uses the gas to generate electricity. Its engineering workshop makes the filter cartridges used in the platform's gas-scrubbing units, and the platform needs 3,600 cartridges a year. The current cost of making one cartridge is:

Cost per cartridge$
Direct materials142.00
Direct labour (4 hours at $9.50)38.00
Variable overhead11.00
Fixed overhead (4 hours at $16.00)64.00
Total255.00

A manufacturer based in Nairobi, Kenya, has offered to supply identical cartridges for $228.00 each, delivered to Rubavu, under a three-year contract. Further information:

  • The workshop technicians are engaged on a casual basis and paid only for the hours they work. They would not be engaged if cartridges were bought in.
  • The fixed overhead includes the salary of the cartridge workshop supervisor, $41,000 a year, and the lease of the cartridge moulding press, $36,500 a year. The supervisor's post would close at no extra cost and the lease can be cancelled without penalty. The rest of the fixed overhead is a share of site costs that will not change.
  • If the cartridges are bought in, the workshop could be let to a boat repair firm for $28,800 a year.
  • Cartridges from Nairobi would travel by road through Uganda. Recent border hold-ups on this route have lasted up to ten days. A failed or missing cartridge forces a scrubbing unit to shut down.
  • The workshop team designed the current cartridge and has modified it twice as the gas composition of the lake has changed.
