Question 1 of 5

Section A: Reading — The Amazing Octopus

Read the text and then answer the questions.

The Amazing Octopus

The octopus is one of the strangest creatures in the ocean. It has a soft body, eight long arms and no bones at all. Although it does not look like a snail, the octopus belongs to the same family of animals, called molluscs.

Inside its soft body, the octopus hides some surprises. It has three hearts that pump blue blood around its body. It can also change the colour and even the texture of its skin in less than a second, which makes it a master of disguise.

When danger is near, the octopus has clever ways to escape. It can squirt a cloud of black ink to confuse a hungry predator, and then jet away by pushing water out of its body. Because it has no bones, it can squeeze through a gap no wider than a coin.

Scientists believe the octopus is remarkably clever. In tests it has learned to open jars to reach food, find its way through mazes, and even carry coconut shells to use as a hiding place. Few other sea animals can solve problems in this way.
