L3M6 Paper 1

✅ Correct Answer: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

📌 Explanation
This is the classic Brundtland definition of sustainable development. It frames sustainability as balancing present needs with the ability of future generations to meet theirs, which is why procurement must weigh environmental and social factors, not just cost.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Buying only the cheapest goods — a price-only view, the opposite of sustainable decision-making.
Maximising short-term profit regardless of impact — ignores the future generations and environmental dimension.
Storing as much inventory as possible — an operational choice unrelated to the definition.

📋 LO: 1.1 — Explain the concept of sustainability and the practical implications for procurement and supply
📑 Indicative content: Meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs

✅ Correct Answer: The environmental merits of alternative solutions; and The social impacts of alternative solutions

📌 Explanation
Sustainable procurement extends decision criteria beyond just price and quality to include the environmental merits and social impacts of alternatives. This broader set of criteria is what distinguishes sustainable procurement from traditional cost-and-quality buying.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
The colour of the supplier's logo — irrelevant to sustainability or value.
The number of letters in the supplier's name — arbitrary and meaningless.
Choosing the longest delivery time on principle — not a recognised criterion and usually undesirable.

📋 LO: 1.1 — Explain the concept of sustainability and the practical implications for procurement and supply
📑 Indicative content: Including environmental merits and social impacts of alternative solutions

✅ Correct Answer: An organisation taking responsibility for its actions and their positive impact on all stakeholders

📌 Explanation
CSR extends corporate goals beyond financial performance to promote good corporate citizenship, responsibility for the organisation's actions, and a positive impact on all stakeholders — employees, communities, customers and the environment.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Focusing only on shareholder returns — the narrow shareholder view CSR deliberately widens.
A legal requirement to store goods on pallets — an operational/handling matter, not CSR.
A method of calculating warehouse floor space — a design calculation, unrelated to CSR.

📋 LO: 1.2 — Explain the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
📑 Indicative content: Promoting good corporate citizenship and responsibility for corporate actions

✅ Correct Answer: Yes, because CSR encourages a positive impact on all stakeholders, not just shareholders

📌 Explanation
CSR promotes good corporate citizenship and a positive impact on all stakeholders, including employees, communities and the environment. Fair labour, community projects and emissions reduction are exactly the kind of stakeholder-focused actions CSR encourages.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Yes, because CSR transfers all costs to suppliers — wrong reasoning; CSR is about responsibility, not cost-shifting.
No, because CSR only concerns shareholders — false; that is the narrow view CSR broadens.
No, because CSR applies only to cleaning rotas — trivialises CSR incorrectly.

📋 LO: 1.2 — Explain the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
📑 Indicative content: Encouraging positive impact on all stakeholders

✅ Correct Answer: Broaden decision criteria beyond traditional economic factors such as price and quality

📌 Explanation
A practical implication of sustainability for procurement is adopting a broader range of decision-making criteria than traditional economic ones — weighing environmental and social impacts alongside price and quality.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Ignore environmental and social factors — the opposite of sustainable procurement.
Always select the cheapest supplier — a price-only approach.
Purchase without any specification — poor practice unrelated to sustainability.

📋 LO: 1.1 — Explain the concept of sustainability and the practical implications for procurement and supply
📑 Indicative content: Adopting a broader range of decision-making criteria other than traditional economic criteria

✅ Correct Answer: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

📌 Explanation
Good corporate citizenship and taking responsibility for corporate actions are central to CSR, which extends corporate goals to include social and ethical responsibilities alongside financial performance.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Palletisation — a materials-handling method, not a responsibility concept.
Carbon footprint calculation — a way to measure emissions, not corporate citizenship.
Materials handling — the movement of goods within a warehouse.

📋 LO: 1.2 — Explain the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
📑 Indicative content: Promoting good corporate citizenship and responsibility for corporate actions

✅ Correct Answer: Atmospheric emissions such as carbon dioxide from burning fuel

📌 Explanation
Burning fuel in transport releases atmospheric emissions — notably carbon dioxide and other pollutants — which is a primary environmental impact of road freight and a key driver of green-logistics initiatives.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
A reduction in global greenhouse gases — reversed logic; road freight adds to, not reduces, greenhouse gases.
The elimination of all noise pollution — false; transport is itself a noise source.
An automatic fall in fuel consumption — running a fleet does not by itself cut fuel use.

📋 LO: 2.2 — Explain the environmental impact of transportation and storage
📑 Indicative content: Air pollution and atmospheric emissions

✅ Correct Answer: The total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an activity, organisation or product

📌 Explanation
A carbon footprint is a measure of the total greenhouse gas emissions (expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent) generated by an activity, organisation or product. Calculating it helps organisations understand and reduce their environmental impact.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
The floor area of a warehouse — a space measure, not emissions.
The number of pallets per aisle — a storage-density measure.
The distance between distribution centres — a logistics distance, not emissions.

📋 LO: 2.2 — Explain the environmental impact of transportation and storage
📑 Indicative content: Carbon footprint calculation

✅ Correct Answer: Yes, because globalisation lengthens transport distances, which tends to raise emissions and works against green logistics

📌 Explanation
Globalisation typically lengthens supply chains and transport distances, increasing fuel use and emissions. This tension between globalisation and green logistics is a core sustainability issue for warehousing and distribution.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Yes, because green logistics requires air freight — wrong reasoning; air freight is among the most carbon-intensive modes.
No, because longer distances always reduce emissions — reversed logic; longer distances generally raise emissions.
No, because globalisation has no effect — false; it directly affects transport intensity.

📋 LO: 2.1 — Describe the impact of environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: Globalisation vs. green logistics

✅ Correct Answer: By encouraging greener modes of transport and setting emissions-reduction policy

📌 Explanation
Governments promote sustainability through policy — encouraging greener transport modes, improving energy efficiency and setting targets to reduce emissions, often backed by legislation and agreements.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Requiring warehouses to double stock — raises waste and handling, not sustainability.
Banning carbon-footprint calculation — would hide impact, the opposite of good policy.
Removing lorry speed limits — tends to increase fuel use, emissions and accidents.

📋 LO: 2.3 — Explain the role of government in promoting environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: Greener modes of transport; Reducing emissions

✅ Correct Answer: Noise pollution; and Land-take and visual intrusion

📌 Explanation
Transport and storage cause a range of impacts beyond air emissions: noise, vibration, accidents, land-take and visual intrusion. Noise pollution and land-take/visual intrusion are two of these recognised effects.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Improved biodiversity guaranteed — an absolute claim; operations more often harm than guarantee biodiversity.
Automatic elimination of accidents — false; transport is itself an accident risk.
A permanent fall in global temperatures — reversed; emissions contribute to warming.

📋 LO: 2.2 — Explain the environmental impact of transportation and storage
📑 Indicative content: Noise pollution; Land-take; Visual intrusion

✅ Correct Answer: Mandating that organisations conceal their emissions data from regulators

📌 Explanation
International legislation and agreements promote transparency, shared emissions targets and cooperation — not concealment. Requiring organisations to hide emissions would defeat the purpose, so it is the odd one out.

❌ Why the other options are wrong: the other three are genuine functions of international agreements.
Setting shared emissions targets — true; a core purpose of climate agreements.
Creating external pressure to act responsibly — true; legislation is a key external pressure.
Encouraging cross-border cooperation — true; agreements coordinate action between nations.

📋 LO: 2.1 — Describe the impact of environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: International legislation and agreements; External pressure on organisations

✅ Correct Answer: Proximity to customers, suppliers and transport links

📌 Explanation
Location is a key principle of warehouse design. Siting near customers, suppliers and good transport links reduces transport cost, lead time and emissions, and improves service — the main drivers of the location decision.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
The colour of the roof — cosmetic and irrelevant to location.
The first letter of the town's name — arbitrary.
The number of vowels in a name — meaningless.

📋 LO: 3.1 — Recognise the principles of store and warehouse design
📑 Indicative content: Location of stores and warehouses

✅ Correct Answer: Smooth product flow through the facility; and Efficient use of available space

📌 Explanation
Warehouse layout is driven by flow, space utilisation and flexibility. A layout that gives smooth product flow and makes efficient use of space reduces handling, travel and cost — two of the key influencing factors.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
The star sign of the manager — irrelevant to layout.
The brand of coffee — a welfare detail, not a design factor.
The number of north-facing windows — not a recognised layout driver.

📋 LO: 3.1 — Recognise the principles of store and warehouse design
📑 Indicative content: Flow, space utilisation and flexibility; Factors that influence store and warehouse layout

✅ Correct Answer: A forklift truck

📌 Explanation
Materials handling equipment moves and lifts goods within a warehouse — forklift trucks, conveyors, cranes and automated systems. A forklift truck is a classic example.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
A carbon footprint report — a measurement document, not handling equipment.
A CSR policy document — a governance document.
An international trade agreement — a legal/policy instrument.

📋 LO: 3.2 — Explain the different types and uses of warehousing equipment
📑 Indicative content: Materials handling equipment

✅ Correct Answer: To combine items into standard loads that are easier and safer to move and store

📌 Explanation
Palletisation groups individual items into standardised unit loads, so they can be moved, stacked and stored efficiently with handling equipment — improving speed, safety and space use.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
To increase items handled separately — reversed; unit loads reduce separate handling.
To calculate the carbon footprint — a measurement task, not the purpose of pallets.
To replace the need for transport — pallets aid, but do not remove, transport.

📋 LO: 3.2 — Explain the different types and uses of warehousing equipment
📑 Indicative content: Palletisation and unit loads

✅ Correct Answer: 1, 2 and 3 only

📌 Explanation
Packaging protects goods, identifies and informs, and is increasingly subject to environmental standards that promote reduction and recycling. Statements 1–3 are correct. Statement 4 is false — adding weight is a drawback to minimise, not the purpose of packaging.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
1, 2 and 4 only — includes false statement 4 and drops correct statement 3.
2, 3 and 4 only — includes false statement 4 and drops correct statement 1.
1, 3 and 4 only — includes false statement 4 and drops correct statement 2.

📋 LO: 3.2 — Explain the different types and uses of warehousing equipment
📑 Indicative content: Packing and packaging; Environmental standards for packaging

✅ Correct Answer: Yes, because automation can raise accuracy, speed and space utilisation but typically requires significant capital investment

📌 Explanation
Automation in warehousing (such as AS/RS and conveyors) can improve accuracy, throughput and space use, but it carries a high upfront capital cost — a genuine trade-off the supervisor has stated correctly.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Yes, because it removes every operating cost immediately — wrong reasoning; automation still has running and maintenance costs.
No, because it cannot improve accuracy — false; improved accuracy is a key benefit.
No, because it is free to install — false; the high capital cost is the main drawback.

📋 LO: 3.2 — Explain the different types and uses of warehousing equipment
📑 Indicative content: The use of automation in warehousing

✅ Correct Answer: Designing for smooth flow, good space utilisation and flexibility

📌 Explanation
Good warehouse design centres on flow, space utilisation and flexibility, with sensible location. These principles keep handling, travel and cost low while allowing the facility to adapt to change.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Blocking all aisles — creates congestion and safety risk.
Locating far from transport links — raises cost and emissions.
Ignoring how goods move — flow is central to layout.
Making the layout impossible to reconfigure — removes the needed flexibility.

📋 LO: 3.1 — Recognise the principles of store and warehouse design
📑 Indicative content: Store and warehouse design; Flow, space utilisation and flexibility

✅ Correct Answer: High energy use for lighting, heating and refrigeration

📌 Explanation
Warehouses consume energy for lighting, heating, cooling and refrigeration, which generates emissions. High energy use is therefore a major source of a warehouse's environmental impact, and reducing it is a key sustainability lever.

❌ Why the other options are wrong: the other three all reduce impact.
Switching to LED lighting — cuts energy use.
Installing solar panels — reduces reliance on grid emissions.
Improving insulation — lowers heating and cooling demand.

📋 LO: 4.2 — Explain the environmental impact of warehousing and distribution
📑 Indicative content: Air pollution and atmospheric emissions

✅ Correct Answer: Global warming and climate change

📌 Explanation
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide trap heat in the atmosphere and drive global warming and climate change. This is the central environmental cost of warehousing and logistics emissions.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
A guaranteed rise in biodiversity — reversed; emissions and land-take tend to harm biodiversity.
Cheaper warehouse rents — an unrelated commercial factor.
Faster forklift trucks — unrelated to greenhouse gases.

📋 LO: 4.3 — Explain the environmental cost of warehousing and logistics
📑 Indicative content: Global warming; Greenhouse gases

✅ Correct Answer: Shifting freight from road to rail or water where practical; and Improving vehicle load utilisation to reduce empty running

📌 Explanation
Greener logistics reduces freight transport intensity and improves utilisation. Modal shift to rail or water (lower emissions per tonne-km) and better load utilisation (less empty running) are two recognised, effective actions.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Separate half-empty vehicles — worsens utilisation and emissions.
Most fuel-intensive mode for all shipments — the opposite of green logistics.
Ignoring route planning — misses easy emissions and cost savings.

📋 LO: 4.4 — Describe the role of government in promoting environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: Reducing freight transport intensity and improving utilisation; Greener modes of transport

✅ Correct Answer: Installing LED lighting with motion sensors and improving insulation

📌 Explanation
Energy efficiency reduces both cost and emissions. LED lighting with sensors and better insulation cut electricity and heating demand, which is a core way to lower a warehouse's environmental impact.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
Leaving lights and heating on continuously — wastes energy.
Removing all insulation — increases heating and cooling demand.
Running empty refrigeration around the clock — wastes energy for no benefit.

📋 LO: 4.4 — Describe the role of government in promoting environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: Energy efficiency; Reducing emissions

✅ Correct Answer: Encouraging organisations to maximise empty vehicle running

📌 Explanation
Maximising empty running would increase emissions and waste, so it is not a sustainable-logistics policy. Government policy instead reduces freight intensity, improves utilisation, promotes greener modes and cuts emissions.

❌ Why the other options are wrong: the other three are genuine sustainable-logistics policies.
Reducing freight intensity and improving utilisation — a core policy aim.
Promoting greener modes — a recognised policy lever.
Improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions — central to sustainability policy.

📋 LO: 4.4 — Describe the role of government in promoting environmental sustainability
📑 Indicative content: Policy on sustainable logistics; Reducing freight transport intensity and improving utilisation

✅ Correct Answer: The cost of avoiding that environmental damage

📌 Explanation
The environmental cost of logistics weighs the cost of the damage caused (e.g. pollution, climate impact) against the cost of avoiding it (e.g. cleaner technology, modal shift). This comparison guides how much to invest in reducing impact.

❌ Why the other options are wrong:
The number of pallets — a storage measure, not an environmental cost.
The height of the racking — a design detail.
The brand of forklift trucks — irrelevant to environmental cost.

📋 LO: 4.3 — Explain the environmental cost of warehousing and logistics
📑 Indicative content: Cost of environmental damage; Cost of avoiding environmental damage
