Berabera Town Council is one of the busiest places in our district. It is the only town council with two market days each week—Tuesday and Saturday. On these days, the town is bustling with people. A few years ago, people were carelessly discarding plastic materials everywhere. There was little concern for the proper disposal of these materials. However, two friends, Mujuni and Ateyot, were not pleased with this situation. They had learned from their teachers about the dangers these materials posed to people and the environment. First, plastic materials do not decompose, which means they destroy the soil by preventing air and water from penetrating. Secondly, they can hold water, providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Thirdly, they contribute to environmental pollution and make the area look unattractive. The two friends had also learned that various useful items could be made from these materials during an educational tour in Jinja. One Saturday morning, Mujuni and Ateyot decided to go around collecting plastic materials. Their actions surprised the residents, who initially thought the two friends had lost their sanity, as they had only seen people with mental health issues engage in such activities. Even their own parents were taken aback. "What's the matter with the two of you?" Ateyot's father asked. "This is so embarrassing!" Ateyot smiled and asked her father to wait and see. Indeed, they knew exactly what they were doing. A few days later, they started making items from the collected plastic materials. They created bags, mats, dolls, sandals, toy cars, and belts, which they sold to earn money. With their earnings, they purchased waste bins for most shops and stalls and bought tree seedlings to distribute to nearby communities. Today, everyone is pleased with Mujuni and Ateyot's efforts. Last week, the area Member of Parliament visited the town council and donated two million shillings to them. During a talk show on Rock FM, she declared Mujuni and Ateyot as heroes and encouraged the youth in the district to take action to protect the environment.
