Section B, Question 1 (20 marks): Mombasa Cashew Packers Ltd

Mombasa Cashew Packers Ltd buys raw cashew nuts from farmers' groups in Kilifi and Kwale counties, then roasts, peels and vacuum-packs the kernels for supermarkets in Nairobi and for export through the port of Mombasa. Raw nuts are bought in 80 kg bags. At present the stores manager re-orders 'when the store looks low', and twice last season the peeling line stood idle for lack of nuts. The finance manager has proposed a formal inventory control policy based on the following estimates.

ItemEstimate
Usage of raw nuts (steady through the year)3,000 bags a month
Cost of placing and receiving one orderKES 18,000
Holding cost (storage, fumigation and insurance)KES 400 per bag per year
Weekly usagemaximum 900, normal 720, minimum 500 bags
Supplier lead timemaximum 3 weeks, normal 2 weeks, minimum 1 week

The stores ledger card for raw nuts for March 2026 shows the following movements (GRN = goods received note; issues are on materials requisition notes):

DateDetailBagsKES per bag
1 MarchOpening inventory6009,000
4 MarchGRN1,0009,400
9 MarchIssue to peeling1,050
16 MarchGRN4509,850
22 MarchIssue to peeling750
27 MarchGRN75010,000
30 MarchIssue to peeling700

Raw cashew prices have risen steadily through the season. The company prices issues using FIFO, and the finance manager wants to see how a perpetual weighted average would compare before the year-end inventory count.

21 (a) Calculate for Mombasa Cashew Packers Ltd the economic order quantity, the re-order level, the minimum and maximum inventory levels, and the total annual ordering and holding cost at the economic order quantity. (8 marks)

0 / 90 words (minimum)

Marks: 8 points

22 (b) Prepare the stores ledger card for raw nuts for March 2026 using (i) FIFO and (ii) the perpetual weighted average method, showing the cost of each issue and the value of closing inventory under each method. (8 marks)

0 / 120 words (minimum)

Marks: 8 points

23 (c) Recommend, with reasons, which pricing method Mombasa Cashew Packers Ltd should use for issues of raw nuts while cashew prices are rising, explaining the effect of each method on reported profit. (4 marks)

Section B, Question 2 (20 marks): Kitwe Conveyor Works PLC

Kitwe Conveyor Works PLC fabricates and assembles belt conveyors and idler rollers for copper mines on the Zambian Copperbelt. It has two production departments: Fabrication, which is heavily mechanised (cutting, rolling and welding), and Assembly, which is labour-intensive (fitting, alignment and testing). They are supported by two service departments, Maintenance and Stores. The budget for the year ended 31 December 2026 showed the following.

FabricationAssemblyStoresMaintenance
Allocated overheads (ZMW)18,500,00012,400,0004,100,0005,600,000
Floor area (square metres)6,0004,0001,0001,000
Budgeted machine hours23,600---
Budgeted direct labour hours-29,400--

Factory rent and rates of ZMW 9,600,000 have not yet been apportioned; they are shared on floor area.

The service departments work for each other as well as for production:

  • Maintenance: Fabrication 50%, Assembly 30%, Stores 20%
  • Stores: Fabrication 54%, Assembly 36%, Maintenance 10%

The company uses the elimination (step) method, closing off Maintenance first because it does the larger share of work for the other service department. Actual results for 2026 were: Fabrication overheads ZMW 31,400,000 with 25,000 machine hours worked; Assembly overheads ZMW 19,850,000 with 28,500 direct labour hours worked. Copper prices were strong during 2026 and the mines ordered more conveyor sections than expected, while Assembly lost time to a shortage of imported bearings.

24 (a) Prepare an overhead analysis statement for Kitwe Conveyor Works PLC that apportions the factory rent and then reapportions the service department costs to the production departments using the elimination (step) method. (10 marks)

0 / 140 words (minimum)

Marks: 10 points

25 (b) Calculate a machine hour absorption rate for Fabrication and a direct labour hour rate for Assembly, and the under- or over-absorbed overhead of each production department for 2026. (6 marks)

0 / 90 words (minimum)

Marks: 6 points

26 (c) Explain TWO reasons for the differences found in (b) and how the net amount should be treated in the cost accounts of Kitwe Conveyor Works PLC. (4 marks)

0 / 90 words (minimum)

Marks: 4 points

Section B, Question 3 (20 marks): Kumasi Kente Weavers Ltd

Kumasi Kente Weavers Ltd employs master weavers in the Ashanti Region to produce hand-woven kente stoles, which it sells to boutiques in Accra and to Ghanaian diaspora retailers in London and Washington. The company prepares monthly management accounts and has always used absorption costing, because that is the basis of its published financial statements. Budgeted and actual data for September 2026 are shown below.

ItemData
Selling priceGHS 450 per stole
Variable production cost (yarn, dyes, weavers' piece rates)GHS 180 per stole
Variable selling cost (agents' commission and courier)GHS 20 per stole sold
Fixed production overheadGHS 540,000 a month, absorbed on a normal output of 6,000 stoles a month
Fixed selling and administration costsGHS 150,000 a month
Opening inventory, 1 September400 stoles
Production in September6,500 stoles
Sales in September6,200 stoles

Actual unit costs, selling price and fixed costs were exactly as budgeted, and opening inventory was valued on the same basis as the current month. The weaving sheds are building inventory ahead of the December festive season and the graduation period. The newly appointed managing director has noticed that monthly profit rises whenever inventory is built up, and has asked whether marginal costing would give the board a clearer picture.

27 (a) Prepare monthly profit statements for Kumasi Kente Weavers Ltd for September 2026 using (i) marginal costing and (ii) absorption costing, showing contribution and gross profit where relevant. (12 marks)

0 / 160 words (minimum)

Marks: 12 points

28 (b) Prepare a statement for the managing director of Kumasi Kente Weavers Ltd reconciling the two profit figures calculated in (a) for September 2026, explaining the source of the difference. (4 marks)

0 / 70 words (minimum)

Marks: 4 points

29 (c) Advise the directors of Kumasi Kente Weavers Ltd which costing method to use for monthly internal reporting, given the seasonal build-up of stoles before the festive season. (4 marks)

0 / 100 words (minimum)

Marks: 4 points

Section B, Question 4 (20 marks): Masaka Pineapple Juices Ltd

Masaka Pineapple Juices Ltd presses fresh pineapples bought from outgrowers in Masaka and Kalungu districts into juice, which it sells in cases of 24 bottles to supermarkets and schools in Kampala and Mbarara. Because fresh fruit spoils within days, all pineapples bought are used in the same month. The company operates a standard marginal costing system; the standard variable cost of one case is:

ElementQuantity x priceShs
Fresh pineapples15 kg x Shs 1,20018,000
Direct labour0.5 hours x Shs 6,0003,000
Variable production overhead (power, cleaning chemicals)0.5 hours x Shs 4,0002,000
Standard variable cost per case23,000

Actual results for April 2026 were:

  • Output: 8,200 cases
  • Pineapples bought and used: 126,500 kg costing Shs 148,005,000
  • Direct labour: 4,350 hours worked and paid, costing Shs 27,405,000
  • Variable production overhead: Shs 16,530,000

In April the buyer switched part of the order to a new outgrower group that offered a lower price per kilogram; its fruit was smaller and less ripe and needed more trimming. Frequent power cuts from the national grid stopped the pressing line several times, and the lost output was made up by weekend shifts paid at an overtime premium. The production manager is pleased that the juice was bought 'cheaply' and has asked the management accountant for a full analysis.

30 (a) Calculate the material price and usage variances, the labour rate and efficiency variances, and the variable overhead expenditure and efficiency variances for Masaka Pineapple Juices Ltd for April 2026. (12 marks)

0 / 140 words (minimum)

Marks: 12 points

31 (b) Prepare an operating statement for Masaka Pineapple Juices Ltd reconciling the standard variable cost of actual output with the actual variable cost of production for April 2026. (4 marks)

0 / 70 words (minimum)

Marks: 4 points

32 (c) Explain possible causes of the variances in (a), showing how they may be interrelated, and recommend which variance the managers of Masaka Pineapple Juices Ltd should investigate first. (4 marks)

0 / 100 words (minimum)

Marks: 4 points
